Article 06: Uncover Your Money-Making Advantage — The Self-Discovery Process#
Hook#
Do you know what your most valuable capability is?
Most people don’t. They’re busy trying to fix weaknesses they’ll never be great at, while their real money-making advantage sits unnoticed.
Let me show you how to find it.
Story: From Self-Doubt to $15K/Month#
Meet Rachel. She came to me convinced she had “nothing special to offer.” She was comparing herself to established experts with 10+ years of experience.
“I’m just a mid-level marketing manager,” she said. “What could I possibly teach anyone?”
So we did an advantage audit. Here’s what we discovered:
We positioned her as: “Email Marketing for Small Business — Enterprise Strategies, Simplified.”
- Month 1: $2,300 (first coaching clients)
- Month 3: $8,500 (course launch)
- Month 6: $15,000/month (coaching + course + templates)
I’ve seen this pattern hundreds of times. Your advantage isn’t something you need to build. It’s something you need to uncover.
Core Concept: The Advantage Formula#
Here’s the framework:
You don’t build advantage from scratch. You identify what’s already there and amplify it.
Three Sources of Advantage:#
These are capabilities you’ve developed over the past 5 years:
- Professional skills (your job expertise)
- Soft skills (communication, leadership, organization)
- Technical skills (tools, platforms, software)
- Creative skills (writing, design, strategy)
These are assets already in your possession:
- Network (contacts, relationships, communities)
- Platforms (access to tools, software, systems)
- Credentials (certifications, degrees, training)
- Experience (projects, results, case studies)
- Content (past work, writing, presentations)
These are activities you’d do even without payment:
- Hobbies you spend time on
- Topics you read about voluntarily
- Conversations you enjoy having
- Problems you love solving
Actionable Steps: Build Your Advantage Inventory#
Step 1: Skills Inventory (20 minutes)#
Set a timer. Write down every skill you’ve developed in the past 5 years. Don’t filter. Don’t judge. Just list.
- What do you do at work that comes easily to you?
- What have friends/colleagues asked you to help them with?
- What have you been paid for (or could be)?
- What tools/platforms do you use confidently?
Step 2: Resources Inventory (15 minutes)#
List everything you have access to:
How many genuine professional contacts do you have?
What communities are you part of?
Who would take your call/email?
What software do you have access to through work?
What subscriptions do you already pay for?
What platforms do you have accounts on?
What certifications do you hold?
What notable projects have you completed?
What results can you document?
Step 3: Interests Inventory (15 minutes)#
Be honest. What do you genuinely enjoy?
- What topics do you read about voluntarily?
- What YouTube videos do you watch?
- What conversations energize you?
- What problems do you love solving?
- What would you do even if nobody paid you?
Step 4: Advantage Ranking (20 minutes)#
Now, score your top items from each list:
| Item | Type | Proficiency (1-5) | Market Demand (1-5) | Passion (1-5) | Total | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Email marketing | Skill | 5 | 5 | 4 | 15 | High |
| Team training | Skill | 4 | 4 | 5 | 13 | High |
- Proficiency: How good are you? (1 = beginner, 5 = expert)
- Market Demand: Will people pay for this? (1 = niche, 5 = high demand)
- Passion: Do you enjoy this? (1 = drain, 5 = energizing)
One-Liner#
“Your advantage isn’t built. It’s buried. Dig it up.”
“Positioning isn’t about fixing weaknesses. It’s about identifying strengths and amplifying them.”
